Police calls for smart doorbell to be installed

Many people travel during the summer holidays and are therefore not at home. Criminals know this too, which is why there are always more burglaries during the summer period than during the rest of the year. The Dutch police have therefore written an article containing tips to prevent a burglary.

The most striking tip is probably to install a smart doorbell with a camera. Via a smartphone app you can watch ‘live’ remotely with the camera and thus keep an eye on things. Many doorbells also give a signal when someone is at the door.

Furthermore, the police advise people to use their smart camera doorbell to log in to Camera in Image. The police use this database to find out which house has a camera. In the event of a break-in, this database can be used to directly request images (from the environment) in order to track down the criminals more quickly. The police cannot monitor the cameras that are in the database.

The police also advise to install time switches. This turns the light on at night, making burglars think you’re home. It is also wise not to announce your holiday on social media and to store valuables properly.

Advice possibly in violation of law

The advice from the police is striking, as most smart doorbells with cameras are aimed at public roads. According to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP), this is not always allowed. This supervisor deals with privacy issues and can tap households on the fingers and even hand out fines.

Only for certain reasons may a camera be pointed at the public road. In addition, households must inform visitors that they are being filmed. Sellers of smart camera doorbells therefore sell warning signs that you can place in the garden, for example.

It can also help to use a wall bracket. This allows you to hang the smart doorbell more obliquely downwards, which changes the viewing angle (and you film less from the road).

We (not) recommend these doorbells

More and more households are using a smart camera doorbell. Do you want to know which model is best to buy? Then read the article below. Here we list the best camera doorbells of the moment.
