Gender equality is only 132 years away

According to the report of the World Economic Forum, the Covid-19 pandemic further widened the gap.

Women are bearing the brunt of the current recession and livelihood crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic and numerous economic shocks stand in the way of closing the gender gap, the World Economic Forum reported on Wednesday. In its 2022 Global Gender Inequality Report, the WEF estimated that – at the current rate of development – it would take 132 years for men and women to reach full equality, and the global gender gap is reduced to 68.1%. The Geneva-based non-governmental organization noted that this was a slight improvement over 136 years – the figure projected for 2021 – but that there was still a long way to go.According to the document, the pandemic has worsened gender inequality by affecting many female-dominated sectors, including travel, retail and tourism.”The current recession, unlike past economic downturns that have generally been worse for men, is disproportionately affecting women,” the report said.At the same time, the forum argues that the transition to gender equality could be speeded up by paying basic workers adequate wages, investing in infrastructure and strengthening political involvement. The research also assessed different continents on the road to gender equality, with North America and Europe reducing the gender gap by more than 76%. Other regions lag behind, including Latin America and the Caribbean (72.6%), Central Asia (69.1%), and East Asia and the Pacific (69%). The lowest performance was shown by South Asia, which closed 62.4% of the gender gap in 2022. The report also broke down gender equality by country, giving the best ratings to Iceland and several Nordic countries, as well as New Zealand, Rwanda, Nicaragua and Namibia. However, the study notes that no country has achieved full gender equality.Hardware, software, tests, interesting and colorful news from the world of IT by clicking here!
