An unexpected order pulled the company developing the NASA bus back from the brink of bankruptcy

They had almost run out of money when one of the largest companies in the USA came out of nowhere.

Back in April, we wrote that the NASA tender, in which they were looking for a supplier for the next generation of minibuses to transport their astronauts to the launch pad, ended with a surprising result. According to the call for tenders, it was necessary to submit a design for a zero-emission vehicle suitable for transporting nine people, including four astronauts in spacesuits, and also having enough space for all the equipment that the astronauts need during their journey. Surprisingly, the finisher was not Airstream, the producer of former NASA buses, otherwise known mainly for their elegant caravans, but neither was Mercedes, whose Sprinter-type bus was used recently. before the American launches. Canoo, a largely unknown startup developing small electric commercial vehicles, won the tender, according to which they must deliver the first Astrovan to NASA by next June at the latest. For all this, they received 149,000 dollars, i.e. approximately 52 million forints, despite the fact that it was recently revealed that they had serious financial problems.A Canoo elektromos furgonja könnyedén átalakítható (Fotó: Canoo)Canoo’s electric van can be easily converted (Photo: Canoo) InsideEVs reported that the company’s financial report for the first quarter of this year revealed that it had almost completely run out of of money. Despite the fact that they were on the verge of bankruptcy, they previously claimed that they had already received more than 17,000 pre-orders for the electric van, which means that approximately 750 million dollars have flowed into the company’s accounts so far. In the first quarter, they recorded a loss of 125.4 million and for the next three months, they calculated an expenditure of 115 million dollars, so despite the serious income, it is not inconceivable that the business really almost went bankrupt. However, before they had to pull down the curtain and inform the pre-orderers that unfortunately they cannot fulfill the orders, a customer came in like a bolt of lightning from the blue sky, who could solve the small company’s problems in one fell swoop. The American Walmart, one of the world’s largest hypermarket chains, immediately ordered 4,500 purely electric vans from Canoo, with the condition that the order can be increased to 10,000 units.A Canoo elektromos furgonja könnyedén átalakítható (Fotó: Canoo)The company was pulled back from the brink of bankruptcy by the giant order of the Walmart hypermarket chain (Photo: Canoo) Canoo’s commercial vehicles will thus deliver Walmart’s own goods to homes, and can also be included in Walmart’s GoLocal service, which offers logistics solutions to other companies. According to the agreement, Canoo Light Delivery Vehicle (LDV) is named parts from his minivan for Walmart’s fleet will be manufactured in the last quarter of this year. However, before that, Walmart can start the first deliveries in a few weeks, with the aim of working with Canoo’s specialists to find the ideal configuration for the vehicles in the future fleet.According to the company’s promise, the van with a modular structure can move about 3.4 cubic meters of goods, and thanks to its modular structure, it can be easily and quickly converted.
